CHAPTER NINETEEN

At a late breakfast, Kekeen questioned Hagh about a return trip to the mines. “Can we use the carriage you came back in?”

“Afraid not.” Hagh shook his head while spreading butter on his pastry. “On the trip with Ghouk, we had six oxen. For the return trip, the priests were only able to loan us two. Sugh and I stripped the carriage down to make it easier for them to pull. What’s left of it barely made it here intact.”

Kekeen frowned, both at his words and his culinary choices. “Are you certain? Couldn’t we repair it a bit?”

“I don’t think so.” Hagh took a huge bite. After swallowing, he added: “I don’t think it would make it more than a couple miles outside the city by now. You’re welcome to look at it, of course. Maybe if you got a master carpenter to work on it. But I still doubt it.”

“So we need a new carriage and oxen to pull it,” Kekeen concluded.

“The only place you’ll find that is the Hawk King’s stables,” Hagh said. “Or maybe the Ghamba Lam’s.”

“Maybe we should take what we need!” Sugh said. “It is for a good cause.”

“I don’t think that would work out, lad.” Hagh eyed Sugh over the top of his pastry. “Both of them have guards. And the penalty for that kind of theft is either death or slavery.”

“We are free men now!”

“Yes, and I’d like to stay that way.” He coughed and looked back to Kekeen. “As free men, we need to think about our future. It’s not much, but I do have some blood stored away at the arena. I’d like to pick it up.”

“Ah, so do I,” Sugh said. “And some more clothes.”

“You should certainly take what is yours,” Kekeen said. “I don’t see how anyone would question that.”

“Will you go with us?” Hagh asked. “I don’t know any of this Daviland’s people, and if we get confronted, it would be good to have someone who knows people.” He glanced toward the door. “I’d ask your father, but I’ve yet to see him this morning.”

“He sleeps in a lot when he entertains late.” Kekeen thought about it. She had no desire to get anywhere near Daviland again, but it made sense to help the two fighters. Besides, how much safer could she be than with two of the most celebrated warriors in the Empire?

The three of them bundled up and found their way to the arena. No guards confronted them when they entered. Hagh and Sugh hurried to their own rooms to gather their things.

While she waited, Kekeen made her way into Aldan’s room. She knew exactly what she’d find, but maybe it was time to take Aldan’s personal items out, like the other two were doing. She knelt beside his chest and opened it, bracing herself for the emotions she knew she’d experience. She’d searched it before, but only while looking for clues to his location.

Clothes made up the bulk of the chest’s contents. She packed them all into a large bag.
